That means deploying AI systems that track decisions with a clear chain of logic, provide explainable outputs for regulators and internal teams and integrate with existing governance frameworks. In practice, this means more than just logging model outputs. When AI is used to decline a loan or flag a fraudulent transaction, banks need to maintain a complete audit trail of what data was used, what risk thresholds were triggered and why the decision was escalated or denied. This becomes critical during regulatory exams or customer disputes.
For example, in loan underwriting, automation may screen applications for revenue volatility or tax inconsistencies. But if that decision is challenged, banks must be able to show what the model saw, how it interpreted the data and which compliance protocols were followed. Without that level of clarity, even accurate decisions can become liabilities.

To close that gap, financial institutions need to prioritize not only technical accuracy but also interpretability. Investing in training, cross-functional collaboration and governance frameworks that support explainable AI will be key to long-term success.

AI has the opportunity to change that. According to Juniper Research, banks deploying AI for risk assessment report predictive accuracy of around 85% in identifying potential defaulters. This can help ensure AI tools align with both operational goals and regulatory obligations. As governance regulations evolve, financial institutions will be expected to explain, test, and monitor the behavior of every AI model in production, including how they’re trained, when they’re updated and what data they’re exposed to. AI success will hinge not just on output, but on oversight.
That’s the path forward: cautious, deliberate and accountable. Banks that treat AI as a safety net, not a silver bullet, will find ways to reduce fraud, strengthen compliance and build confidence with auditors. The winners will be the ones who prove AI can enhance trust, not compromise it.
