What Are Bubble Budgets?

MoneyDesktop describes Bubble Budgets as “a better way to budget, visualize and interact” with financial data. Bubble charts are the cornerstone of the concept. Using circles, or “bubbles,” to represent budgets allows you to quickly identify budgets that need the most attention. At a glance, a user can determine a budget’s health (color), significance (size) and progress (meter) relative to other budgets.

PFM Innovations Thrust Financial Fitness Into the Spotlight

Equally critical to the user experience, MoneyDesktop is easily integrated into a bank or credit union’s existing online banking platform — apparently by dropping in only a few lines of code. If it sounds slick, it is.

But Ryan Caldwell, Founder and CEO of MoneyDesktop, is keen to point out that his company’s PFM tool is more than just snazzy bells and whistles: “It helps you increase loan volume, attract new users, and stay ahead of the competition.”

“With MoneyDesktop as your PFM partner, you can now protect your online banking users from signing up with competitor bank or third-party PFM like Mint.com,” Caldwell adds.

Last spring, Caldwell said that the industry targets PFM adoption rates of around 10-15%, while some MoneyDesktop clients have seen adoption rates as high as 60% within a year. STAR Financial really put forward a concentrated marketing effort around the MoneyDesktop app and thus saw 4,500 downloads of in the first month. MoneyDesktop also says another credit union client recently launched the app has seen a 17% adoption rate in the first month.

Among the many benefits MoneyDesktop boasts its clients will enjoy: increased product cross-sales, increased profits, increased balances and increased retention rates.

Caldwell feels there is a me-too mentality impeding innovation in the PFM space. According to Caldwell, many PFM providers have been trying to do little more than duplicate the success of standout solution Mint.com. “We saw more opportunity in creating a cohesive slew of benefits for consumers, financial institutions and online banking partners.”

Caldwell doesn’t list specific names for his competitors, but some of the providers offering PFM solutions to banks and credit unions that include Intuit FinanceWorks, Geezeo, Meniga, Lodo Software, Yodlee and Money Strands. Standalone PFM solutions offered directly to consumers include Mint (the 800-pound gorilla), Credit Karma, Learnvest, BillGuard, Personal Capital, Hellowallet and others. A handful of financial institutions have built their own proprietary PFM systems, most notably PNC’s Virtual Wallet.

  2. There’s no doubt about it – nobody is making PFM look better than Money Desktop. Can’t wait to see the next generation that surely will include transaction generating capability on mobile. Besides that hole, their mobile first strategy is dead on. Consumers are much more likely to pull this up on their tablet on the couch or while they are riding the train. Managing your money at your desk is work – checking in on your money and “playing” with your bubble budgets isn’t.

    Great product, great team, great business model.

    This will sound petty coming from a competitor and while I assure you it is not the intention, I too like Money Desktop and their team, we owe it to PFM-history to acknowledge bubbles are not a MD invention and Citi’s/Capital One’s Bundle had had them long ago http://bankingblog.celent.com/2010/02/bundlecom-requires-a-better-bundle/ so then the question becomes isn’t it short changing them to say it is only one other way of visualising budget that makes them successful? Usability in PFM is a very nuanced topic and a lot should be said on the matter.

    As is often the case with any innovation, it is not the original creator who gets lauded with praise; it is the company (or individual) who brings it to the biggest market. Apple really hasn’t invented anything they get credit for — graphical UI, MP3 players, tablets. C’est la vie… Citi and Capital One may (or may not) have offered bubble-style budgets before MoneyDesktop, but MoneyDesktop are the folks responsible for making it widely available to the financial industry.

    Fair point. I’m just saying there must be other elements to their “secret sauce” and I think one is outlined here – their mobile-first strategy. I am not knocking the power of visual, on the contrary and we found out that the way a PFM solution approaches budgets can have a direct impact on adoption but most importantly retention. My point was that there are several elements to make PFM successful and my guess is that MD is hitting a few of those while design is only one.
