Five (More) Reasons To Blog (Even If Nobody Reads It)

Followed a link in my Twitter stream to an excellent article on the {grow} site called Ten reasons to blog – even if nobody reads it. Ten very good reasons to blog, but after I read it thought: Not the reasons I’d suggest. So here are some more reasons why you should blog, even if nobody reads it:

1. You’ll become a better communicator. I’ve been in the work force for 27 years — a third of it was spent at Forrester Research. What I am most thankful for regarding my Forrester experience was learning how to write and present (or at least, how to write and present better than the average business person, in my not so humble opinion). What I’ve come to believe in the past 27 years is that it simply isn’t enough to have the better idea — you need to be able to communicate that idea in such a way that it persuades people, inspires people, educates people, etc.

The problem for most business people is that they don’t have enough opportunities to develop and hone their communication skills. If you start a blog, you are creating that opportunity.

2. You’ll have to think harder (and maybe more often). I love exposing and challenging the conventional wisdom — especially since so much of it is based on mindless, uncritical thinking. If you start a blog, sure, you can get away with writing mindless crap that may attract millions of readers. More likely, though, you’ll want your blog to reflect your thoughts and opinions on things. And as a result, you’ll have to think a little more critically about what those thoughts and opinions are. And then after you write a few posts, you’ll start thinking “hmm…what should I write about next?” And you’ll soon realize that you’re thinking harder and probably more often.

3. You’ll capture your thoughts for future use. Maybe this isn’t as important to you as it is to me. But I can’t tell you how many times, in the course of writing a report or preparing a presentation, that I’ve gone back to a blog post I’ve written and stolen something off my blog. This has saved me so much time and effort, I couldn’t even begin to estimate that time.

4. You can be somebody you’re not (or that you want to be). If you read a lot of blogs, you’ll definitely see how people’s personalities come out in their blogs. But did you ever stop to think: Is that the way they really are, or is it something they want to be or are trying to be through their blog? A blog gives you the freedom to be that expert or whatever, even if you’re not. I’m not encouraging you to be a phony or anything like that, but it’s your call.

5. You’ll learn how to be a better marketer. If you start a blog and nobody reads it, it’s nobody fault but yours. If you want people to read it, it’ll mean figuring out what clicks with people, who
