Customers of RBS and NatWest, two major UK banks, can ditch their debit cards for their mobile phones. Thanks to a new innovation, customers can use the ‘GetCash’ service to pull cash from ATMs without needing a debit card.
GetCash offers customers an easy fix for lost or forgotten cards, a way to get cash quickly to family members or friends in need, or a choice of leaving their wallets at home.
Through the RBS and NatWest mobile banking app, customers who request cash will receive a 6-digit pin. This code can be entered at an ATM, and once the amount of cash requested has been confirmed, funds are distributed accordingly.
RBS and NatWest already offers an emergency cash service for those who lose their debit cards. The emergency cash service lets customers enrolled in online banking access up to £300. Everyone else can get up to £60 to tide them over. RBS and NatWest say that nearly 60,000 people have already used this year.
The GetCash mobile app innovation is just taking the emergency cash service one step further. “After positive feedback we’re extending the availability of this service to the 2.4 million customers who already have the RBS and NatWest banking app on their phone,” the RBS said in a statement.
GetCash will be combined with a range of other mobile developments, which together will allow RBS and NatWest to offer one of the most integrated mobile payments platform available in the UK. The bank hopes these services will provide the first genuine, all-mobile alternative to the old school wallet.
“This has never been done anywhere in the UK, and yet is a really simple and secure way to help our customers get cash whenever and wherever they need it,” said Ben Green, Head of Mobile at NatWest and RBS. “We’ve heard countless stories from customers who’ve left their wallet behind, or parents who need a quick way to send money across to their children immediately. GetCash means these problems have been solved in a totally secure and painless way.”
