Two things I'm sick of: "Partnership" and "Shiny, happy people". I have been a part of getting both those things INTO banks in the Middle East (We're a little behind out here!) – now everyone is on the bandwagon, I'm pushing to move on and get different again! Please everyone join me in vowing never to use a child flying a kite with a bank again; never to show shiny, happy people grinning meaninglessly into the camera again; never to say that we are your 'financial partner' again!

This article captures my sentiments and what I have been expressing for the past 5 years! I love the quote, "It is a promise..." Everything an employee does and says should convey the "promise" we make to our members. I have asked on many occasions, what differentiates us? I have been told, "Our service..." It didn't really answer my question to the degree that I would have hoped, however, what makes my job wonderful is that there is latitude in everything I say and do that allows me to create moments of differentiation and brand building. Great article!

Great interview! Especially the comments on using shiny happy people photos in everything! As credit unions move into each others' communities, our credit union clients are starting to understand that differentiation from for-profit banks is simply not enough. They must discover what makes them individually appealing.

Love Denise's answer and the suggestion to keep branding on every meeting agenda, especially after the branding has been paid for!

Keep up the good work. Love the site!

My favorite branding question: "When will we be DONE branding?"

Answer: "When you're done with accounting."
