The Ultimate Social Media Image Size Cheat Sheet

If you’re tired of chasing down all the pixel sizes for images in your financial institution’s social media profiles, bookmark this page. Here’s everything you need for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Linkedin.

Subscribe TodayCover Photo: 851 x 315 px
You can’t upload a cover photo that’s less than 720 px wide. For sharp, crisp images, start with a canvas that’s twice the size (1702 x 630 px). For images with text or graphics, you may get a higher quality result by using a PNG file.

Profile Picture: 160 x 160 px
Profile pictures must be at least 180 x 180 px to upload. Rectangular images will be cropped from the center of the image. When you post an update, comment or like someone else’s page, your profile picture will appear at 90 x 90 px.

App Tab Images: 111 x 74 px
If you upload an image larger than this, Facebook will scale it to 111 px wide then crop it to 74 px tall starting from the top of the image. If you want to “tile” all three app tabs together to stitch a single image together, just remember there is an 8 px gap between each image.

Timeline Image: 403 x 403 px
Highlighted Image: 843 x 403 px
The maximum file size for uploaded images is 2048 x 2048 px. Photos uploaded to your timeline can be viewed up to 960 x 720 px in the lightbox. Larger images will display from the center of the image. Fans can opt to view an image in full-screen mode which will present it at the maximum allowable size.

Profile Picture: 73 x 73 px
The maximum file size is 500 x 500 px, and this is what users will see when they click on your picture in your profile. When your profile picture appears next to your tweets and in the “Who To Follow” sidebar, Twitter will resize it down to 48 x 48 px. When your profile picture appears in someone’s timeline (because you followed or retweeted them), it will be resized to 24 x 24 px.

Header Image: 520 x 260 px
Twitter recommends dimensions of 1252 × 626 px to accommodate all the different devices and screen sizes used today, but will most commonly appear at the 520 x 260 px size for most users. The maximum file size for header images in Twitter is 5MB.

Background Image: Max file size of 2MB
There really isn’t a cap on the width or height of your Twitter background image, but if you make it too wide, most users won’t be able to see whatever you put on the right-hand side. Just remember: not everyone will have their screen scaled large enough to see your background design — the narrower you make it, the more people who will see it. 90% of users will see at least 78 pixels of the left side of your background image. 67% will see at least 204 pixels. But only 21% will see 284 pixels.

Shared Image: 435 x 375 px
When you share an image on Twitter, it will appear in other people’s timelines at a maximum size of 435 x 375 px, although users will see a larger version (if available) when they click on it. The last six images you upload will also appear in the left-hand sidebar of your profile with 90 x 90 px previews. If you’re really dedicated, you can cheat your block of preview images into a banner ad: three columns by two rows of 90 x 90 images with 3 px of separation between them. You can see an example of this in action here.

Video Preview: 435 x 244 px
If you share a link to a video on YouTube, this is the size of the video’s preview frame that other users will see in their timelines.

Channel Icon: 90 x 90 px
For best results upload an 800px by 800px image. Maximum file size is 1MB. Non-square images will be cropped. Remember: If you want to create any separation between your channel icon and your channel artwork, you will need to include a border within your channel icon.

Channel Art: 640 x 175 px (mobile)
Channel Art: 768 x 175 px (tablet)
Channel Art: 1060 x 175 px (max width for desktop browsers)
Channel Art: 2120 x 1192 (web TV)
YouTube will scale your channel artwork using responsive web design. YouTube recommends uploading channel art at 2560 x 1440 px with a max file size of 2MB. Your channel art banner will automatically scale to anywhere between 640 x 175 pixels (narrowest) to 1060 x 175 pixels (widest). More info from YouTube on how this works here.

  1. Nice reference guide! You might also include the image sizes for Facebook Events, which recently changed to 714×264 for the banner image. To complicate matters, it seems you can no longer just add a thumbnail for the event, Facebook just centers your banner image in the square for the thumbnail. The best workaround I’ve seen for this is to make your event banner proportions 714×714 with an area of 714×264 that you’ll plan to use for your banner graphic. That way, the whole graphic will scale down perfectly for your thumbnail, and you can reposition the banner image until you have the graphics/text you want displayed centered in the rectangle for the banner. If anyone has seen a better way to make this work, I’d love to hear it!

  2. Why is it that my twitter profile image is still blurry after using 73 x 73 size image?

  3. Devlin, upload your image at 500×500 pixels and that should clear things up for you.

  4. I really appreciate you putting all the social media image sizes in one place. It is an awesome resource for me and my readers.

  5. This is a really nice guide that I use regularly. The only thing I miss here is the profile picture guidelines for Google Plus.

  6. Do you also know the background image for medium.com?

  7. Nice guide. Perhaps it could be updated to include Google Plus as well?

  8. Google + header is 2120 x 1192

  9. Thanks loads!!! Great cheat sheet to have handy!!

  10. Hi,

    Useful guide which I’ve bookmarked.

    Think you are missing the optimal size for a Facebook and Twitter image though, if you want to add those to your list they are as follows;

    Facebook; 1200×627
    Twitter: 1024×512
